History

AutoCAD Product Key was originally developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as part of the MITRE Corporation’s Charting and Geographic Information Systems (CAGIS) project. In the early 1970s, CAGIS developed interactive graphics tools for use in planning, engineering, and managing CAGIS geographic information systems. At the time, mainframe-based CAD software was generally considered to be cost prohibitive and slow. With the advent of affordable desktop PCs, CAGIS software designers moved from the mainframe to the PC. Designers also began to add a graphic user interface to facilitate quick access to CAD tools and data.

Following the work of MITRE, Autodesk acquired the CAGIS software and CAGIS technology in 1982. The MITRE software would later be rebranded as AutoCAD in 1987. Autodesk continued to further develop and improve AutoCAD with subsequent releases, and began manufacturing AutoCAD on CD-ROM in 1994. AutoCAD became a freeware product in 1995 and the first commercial CAD software to use the Win32 GUI. In 2006, Autodesk launched the AutoCAD Graphics product for network designers, with the release of AutoCAD 2009.

AutoCAD 2010 was released in July 2009 and the last free release of AutoCAD. This change was done in response to Autodesk not renewing its previous license agreement with the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), a professional organization for architects and engineers, to include AutoCAD as part of their membership. AICP members will be given free AutoCAD 2010 until 2012.
