The 2005 Roger Penrose Lecture was given at the Royal Institution of Great Britain on 21 November 2005, and concerned the “quantum non-locality of nature” and the “entanglement of consciousness”.
The lecture was delivered by Stephen Hawking, who spoke after Roger Penrose. Hawking said:
This lecture explores the ‘quantum non-locality of nature’ and its possible implication for our understanding of the universe. The fundamental theory of quantum mechanics says that nature has two contradictory qualities. It is at the same time local and non-local, and often local theories violate this principle. This contradiction arises as a result of the way in which we measure the quantum properties of systems. Our measurements can disturb them and produce a form of information that cannot be destroyed. However, the non-local aspects of the quantum description are usually overwhelmed by the local effects. This makes physics attractive, as it avoids contradictions that arise in local theories. In this lecture we argue that quantum non-locality is surprisingly robust to our modifications of it, and we discuss the implications for quantum theory and the interpretation of quantum phenomena.
Hawking was introduced by Penrose, who, after a series of greetings, said:
A large part of what I’m going to say is based on a joint work with Roger Penrose, which was first published in 1970. You might know that this was the year in which gravity got its confirmation as a real force, but in 1970 there was another piece of big news, and that was that Heisenberg showed that what we call spacetime is an illusion of the observer. You can’t measure absolute coordinates of events in spacetime. It’s an illusion. There’s no absolute position, and there’s no absolute time. If you measure the position of, say, an electron in a field you measure its position relative to the field, and you can’t separate this field from the electron. You might think, OK, what’s the significance of all this? Well, it turns out that Heisenberg’s discovery is what leads to the non-locality that Penrose has so much trouble with. Heisenberg’s discovery of the observer’s role is important because it shows that there are new laws of nature. You may say
